Kentz Honoured by Sipchem
Sipchem1
L-R: Ross O’Muirthile; Neil O’Mullane; Abdullah S. Al-Saadoon, Sipchem President of Acetyls and President of Operations; and Tony McCarthy

Kentz in Saudi Arabia was recently honoured when Saudi International Petrochemical Company (Sipchem) celebrated the successful start-up of its Jubail Acetyls Complex in Jubail, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A celebratory function was held in Jubail on
24th March 2010.

The complex consists of a 460,000 metric tonnes per annum (mtpa) Acetic Acid plant, a 330,000 mtpa Vinyl Acetate Monomer plant and a 345,000 mtpa Carbon Monoxide plant. It also includes a utilities plant and product transfer pipelines to King Fahd Industrial Port, port storage facilities, product loading lines and ship-loading facilities.

Kentz executed the pipelines and port facilities contract on an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis. Also under Kentz’s scope were the acetic acid, vinyl acetate monomer and utilities plants and the carbon monoxide plant under electrical and instrumentation (E&I) construction contracts. These contracts amounted to almost 9 million man-hours without a single Lost-Time Incident.

The successful completion of these projects further cements the excellent relationship established between Kentz and Sipchem since Sipchem’s establishment in 1999. Other projects recently completed successfully for Sipchem include the Acetal Polishing Unit and Truck-loading Facility, both of which were executed on an EPC basis within Sipchem’s operational Butanediol plant.

Congratulations to Ross O’Muirthile, Saudi Arabia Country Manager; Neil O’Mullane, Kentz Senior Projects Director; Tony McCarthy, Kentz Construction Business Unit Operations Manager, Saudi Arabia; and everyone involved in these projects for all the hard work they have put in.

Friends in High Places

On Friday 19th February, Claire and Eric Barry were enjoying brunch in the Four Seasons in Doha when the Emir of Qatar, HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, came into the restaurant. Claire is a Project Engineer with Kentz based in Doha and Eric is a Project Manager for Kentz based in Ras Laffan Industrial City.

The Emir, the head of state, was very pleasant and took the time to chat with the siblings about where they were from and what company they worked for. The Barrys were delighted with their chance encounter as it’s not every day you get to meet royalty!

Football Focus

Kentz employees based on the Banyu Urip Gas and Oil Separation Plant in Cepu, Central Java, Indonesia, are keen football supporters. In fact they like the sport so much they decided to set up teams to play each other in the local town of Bojonegoro.

The games were organised by Ged Brannan, Site Planner and ex-pro footballer, and Andrew Harvey, Piping Engineer. They were initially played between employees of Kentz and Exterran, the main contractor on the project but soon the security people on site joined in and more followed in their footsteps.

The games are for fun but as in any competition there is a bit of healthy rivalry between the teams. Not only are players keeping up their fitness but they are building new friendships and everyone is thoroughly enjoying the games, so long may they continue!

Smiles All Around for Innovative Winners

Employees working for Kentz on the Pluto B Project in Karratha, Western Australia, recently took part in a Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) competition run by Woodside, the project client.

All contractors and work crews were encouraged to participate by providing new and innovative ideas related to safety and the environment. This initiative was established in an effort to improve the JHA information on the project.

With more than 200 entries, Kentz’s Substation Team 3 proudly received 4th place in the competition. Each team member received a gift voucher for the Boating, Camping and Fishing Store to the value of AUD $500.00.

Congratulations to the Kentz team on their great effort and keep up the good work!

Trevor Graduates with Top Honours
Trevor
Trevor with his degree

On 9th December 2009 Trevor ter Wolbeek, a Kentz bursary student, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (Hons) from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He received 75% for his Honours year, which equates to an “A” symbol. In addition, he received the Adolf Goldsmith Memorial Prize for Outstanding Progress in his degree, as well as a Certificate of Merit for obtaining 94% – the highest mark in the class – in Electrical Engineering Design. He received this result for a feasibility study he completed on implementing solar power to rural communities instead of through the traditional network system.

Trevor started on a full bursary in March 2006 and has worked for Kentz during university vacations for a combined period of just over a year, which included seven months full-time at Kentz Integrated Solutions, Vanderbijlpark, in 2008. He also spent some time in the Midrand office. With effect from 2nd November 2009, Trevor has been employed full-time at Kentz Integrated Solutions as an Electrical Engineer.

Congratulations to Trevor on his achievements and may he have a long and successful career with Kentz!

Trevor would like to thank Kentz for its support with his bursary, without which none of this would have been possible.

Hi-pots Debate in Doha
Hi-Pots
Frontline Management Skills Workshop attendees (L-R): Michael Goulding, John Kelly, Tomas Burke, Matthew Kimpton, John Warlow, Michael Cremin, Greg Deane and David O’Neill

High potential (hi-pot) graduates and junior supervisors working for Kentz in Qatar and Russia attended the first Frontline Management Skills (FMS) Workshop in the Marriott Hotel, Doha, from 20th-22nd February.

As part of the Supervisory Management Development Programme (SMDP), participants must attend FMS workshops. The SMDP also encompasses business rotation and mentoring.

A range of sessions examine self-organisation and managing people. However, because of the mix within the group, some of the debates provided the best opportunity to compare and contrast client, employee and other stakeholder relationships in Qatar and Russia.

The FMS workshop, in common with all Kentz Skills Enhancement Courses (SECs) encourages small teams to examine real issues and generate potential solutions for implementation back at work.

Thank-you to Gwen Gannon, Corporate Human Resources (HR) Officer; Melissa O’Connor, Training and Development Co-ordinator; Michael Pyers, Middle East Regional HR Manager; and the regional HR teams for organising the event, which was facilitated by Eric Sandelands from Corporate Learning Consultants Ltd.
