Kentz Krusaders
Complimentary Cooler Bags

Since Thiess Kentz commenced work in Australia in 2004 there has been no Loss Time Injury (LTI). This equates to the staggering milestone of two million man-hours worked without an LTI. To celebrate this magnificent achievement the management of Thiess Kentz distributed environmentally friendly cooler bags to all staff. The management also commended all staff on their terrific accomplishment and encouraged them to continue to work safely.

Fun Warfare in Woods

On Friday 8th August employees from the Kentz office in Clonmel headed off in a convoy to Colligan Woods, some 33 km away, to have an afternoon of paintballing. There was a good turnout with 19 people attending - funnily enough there were more women than men!

Once they got to the camp the military-style afternoon commenced with attendees being given camouflage overalls, padded vests, gloves, hats, face protection and bullets. After an informative safety presentation from one of the marshals, the group split into two teams. The guns were handed out and off into the woods they went for the games to begin.

They fought hard during the four games, the teams alternating between attack and defence in each game to determine a winner. The first game was a draw as neither team reached the target but the blue team got the upper hand and triumphed in the second and third games. For the fourth and final game the green team gave it their all as they had nothing to lose and eventually they were the victors.

A great, albeit painful, day was had by all. Surely more will be seen from this crazy bunch in the near future!

Behavioural Event Interviewing

The training and development team completed a series of Skills Enhancement Courses (SEC) in the Kentz office in Midrand, South Africa, recently. This included a 1-day Behavioural Event Interviewing (BEI) course for some of the senior managers. The technique was demonstrated in a number of mock interviews. Dany De Barros became the “lucky” candidate for an hour while the rest of the “interviewing team” interviewed him and practised the techniques learnt from the morning session.

Paul Knowles, Paul Rebelo, Hayley Barker, Dany De Barros, Joe Keogh and Donal O’Neill.
Back row (L-R) Paul Knowles, Paul Rebelo and Hayley Barker. Front row (L-R) Dany De Barros, Joe Keogh and Donal OÕNeill.

Dany found the questioning intense and extremely tough to answer and he will definitely be using the technique shortly to fill a finance slot in South Africa. We cannot divulge if Dany was hired for the role but suffice to say he was the only candidate!

This specific course will be run in the Clonmel office shortly and in the Middle East in October 2008.

Improve Your Interviewing Techniques
BEI came on stream in the late 1980s. The technique is based on the premise “how a person behaved in the past will predict how they will behave in the future”.

The BEI interview consists of structured questions on the candidate's past behaviour in similar situations to those that will be encountered in the new position. It goes beyond determining if the person can do the job - it determines whether a person can do a good job, how it will be done and to what extent.

It starts with a lead question and then has several follow-on questions which probe more information from the candidate. The candidate will only be able to answer from experience and the interviewer can then easily see if she or he had genuine experience in the role.

Typical BEI questions would be:
Lead Question - Give an example of when you had to motivate other people?
Probe 1 - How did you go about it?
Probe 2 - What responses did you get?
Probe 3 - What difficulties did you face?
Probe 4 - What evidence did you have that the motivation was a success?

The interviewer applies the same questions to all candidates to determine who would be the best candidate for the role.

The BEI course is coming to your region shortly so sign up and pick up some useful techniques. Please contact your Human Resources manager to express interest.

On Track for Pole Position
SEC Participants
Jason English on track

Jason English, a Site Manager for the Maintenance & Shutdowns Division of Kentz South Africa, is passionate about motor sport. At a recent race at the Midvaal Race Track he qualified in 2nd place, with a lap time of 1:09.33. In heat 1, he finished second after leading for the first 7 laps. He was out-braked at the end of the back straight and unfortunately he lost the lead. In the 2nd heat he started from 2nd and finished in the same position. Jason had a bad start falling to 5th place after running off the track at turns 2 and 3 but recovered throughout the rest of the race.

On 26th July, the Qatar Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) Team, sponsored by Kentz, held a draw for the tickets to the 2008 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final at Croke Park which takes place between Waterford and Kilkenny on 7th September.

The prize was won by Jason McSweeney, a new recruit to Qatar Kentz, and included flights from Doha to Dublin, two nightsÕ accommodation and tickets for the game, the latter very kindly donated by Dr. Noel Kelly. The draw, which was organised by the Qatar GAA Team, was held in order to raise money for their upcoming trip to the Guinness Asian Gaelic Games taking place from 10th-12th October in Penang, Malaysia.

The GAA Team would like to thank all those who supported them by buying tickets for the draw. We wish the Qatar Kentz GAA Team the best of luck at the Asian Gaelic Games as well as wishing Jason a safe and enjoyable trip to Ireland.

Taleo
Total applicants to date 33,370
People employed through Taleo 2008 to date 291
Requisitions open: (August 2008) 101
Open positions to fill 462

The Taleo system, which went live across the Kentz Group in September 2007, is now powering ahead and providing real gains in relation to hire rates and cost to hire, as well as allowing a greater global reach to possible candidates. Kentz has substantially reduced its agency costs over the past year due to the increase in hiring from other sources. If a candidate is registered in Taleo then s/he is free to source. Before selecting a candidate from an agency the recruiter should check to see if we have a candidate available on the system.

The Kentz website, re-launched in January 2008, provides a direct route to 50% of all hires. Using Taleo, the recruitment team can concentrate on what sources provide the most applicants and the ones that provide a good return on investment in advertising costs etc.

Since July 2007 all western graduate recruitment has been driven through Taleo and since March 2008 all western apprentice recruitment has been driven through Taleo.
