Helping Make Dreams Come True
Over the past couple of months, the Thiess Kentz team working on the Rapid Growth Project (RGP) 5, based in Yandi, Australia, have donated profits from the sales of soft drinks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Management purchased the drinks and sold them on to staff with a profit of $1 per can. The generous amount of almost AUS $2,000 has been raised through this initiative for this very worthwhile cause.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a charity dedicated to granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Since its inception in Australia in 1985, it has granted thousands of wishes. These wishes range from such simple dreams like owning a puppy or meeting a sporting hero to making unforgettable memories while on a trip to Disneyland.

From Russia with Love
The management and staff of Kentz in Russia recently held a special evening to congratulate Kentz’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Hugh O’Donnell, on winning the Ernst & Young International Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2009.

Hugh O'Donnell

The event was held at the famous Italian bar “Chipolini” in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Sakhalin Island. To commemorate Hugh's achievement, Alun Rees, Technical Support Services Business Unit Manager (Russia), presented Hugh with a plaque and a book about Sakhalin Island on behalf of Kentz Russia employees.

The employees were delighted to be able to share this momentous occasion with Hugh and to wish him every success in the future.

1980s Flashback
Rubiks Cube

On Saturday 21st November employees from the Kentz office in Clonmel gathered together with Brenda Leavy, Corporate Services Co-ordinator, and her family and friends to celebrate a milestone birthday (ladies never disclose their age!).

The 1980s-themed party was held in a local venue and everyone did their best to look the part. They were transported back to the 1980s with big hair, bright make-up, luminous colours - even a few famous rockers made special appearances. All the greatest hits from that decade were played by the excellent DJ who entertained guests until the wee hours of the morning. Brenda was treated to a Rubik’s-Cube-shaped cake and a beautiful speech by her father.

All attendees had a great night and Brenda would like to thank everyone from the Clonmel office for the fantastic effort they put in. From all in Kentz, we wish Brenda a very Happy Birthday!

Highlighting Water Safety

In 2008 Elissa Hockings, an Administrator for Thiess Kentz in Brisbane, tragically lost her 16-month-old son Harper James in a pool drowning accident. In his memory, the Harper James Hockings
Swim/Walk-a-thon fundraiser was established, in order to help raise funds to highlight pool safety awareness.

This year the event was held on 10th October to coincide with National Drowning Awareness Month. As well as raising funds for safety awareness, there was a donation made to the Ipswich Hospice Care which provides palliative care and bereavement services to people affected by drowning deaths.

Thiess Kentz donated AUS $1,000 and a further AUS $1,600 was received from employees in Perth and Brisbane.

Well done to all who took part in the swim/walk-a-thon. This is an extremely worthwhile cause and hopefully it will continue to be supported with such enthusiasm going forward.

Marathon Mania
On 30th November Kentz in Bahrain entered a team of 16 runners into a relay marathon run across the island. The race was organised by the Round Table to raise money for various charities in the Kingdom. The Kentz team consisted of seven of Kentz’s “fittest” employees, Rory O’Donnell, Joe Cassin, Kevin Bonner, Takis Karallis, Tony Lenard, Hugh O’Donnell and Jun Alicante. Rory O’Donnell’s family and Tony Lenard’s son also joined in the fun, as well as three Sipchem employees, including Blake Budge, Bharat Yadav and Javier Barros. The final two members of the team were Steve Allen and Elliot Ellenthorpe, friends of Kentz.

Following the race, everyone headed to the rugby club to watch some Gaelic games. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the race and hopefully we will see you all back next year to compete again! A special congratulations goes to Angel (Jun) Alicante who ran the race without having trained, as Raman Kolazhy couldn’t make the event.

Gauteng’s Greatest Race

Kentz employees from the Midrand office in South Africa recently participated in the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge. There was great excitement as the 17 Kentz cyclists lined up to pedal off.

The race was initiated by Midrand Country Cyclists in 1997 and featured then a field of 4,500 cyclists. It has become increasingly popular and is now the biggest cycling race in the province of Gauteng. It attracts the cream of the cycling crop and had approximately 28,000 participants this year!

The organisers of the race is 94.7 Highveld radio station, as well as various community and service clubs who provide manpower and support throughout the race’s 94.7km. The riders donated monies raised through personal sponsorship to charities of their choice.

He was closely followed by Jacques De Villiers, Project Engineer, who had a time of three hours and 25 minutes, and Nicolene Scheepers who finished in three hours and 39 minutes.

Kentz had a hospitality site located at the end of the race where most of the cyclists recovered, relaxed and enjoyed refreshments. It was a great day out and hopefully we will see you all racing again next year.
