Dr. Eric Sandelands |
Kentz 2007 Training and
Development Initiatives
2007 represents a major step-up in the development of training interventions designed to help Kentz employees achieve their career objectives within the company, while ensuring the necessary skills base is in place at all levels to facilitate the ongoing growth and success of the business internationally. Following January’s successful HR Workshop, Hugh O’Donnell invited Dr. Eric Sandelands to play a leading role in ensuring the timely and successful introduction of a new wave of programmes and interventions. He will work closely with Takis Karallis, Donal O’Neill, James Cassin and Bob Greaney. Eric has worked with Kentz managers for some time, developing the Executive Diploma in Leadership and Management (EDipLM) and as Set Advisor for the IMCA MBA programme.
He will be heavily involved in the design and delivery of The Supervisory and Management Development Programme (SMDP) consisting of two components:
1) REEP – Rotation, Exposure & Experience Programme (for recently qualified graduates).
2) EMSP – Entry Management Skills Programme (for recently qualified tradesmen).
He will also be involved in developing the Skills Enhancement Courses (SECs), including Mentoring, Team Building and Change Management.
He will assist Bob Greaney in developing The EPC Project Manager (EPC PM) Programme. |
Diving to the Top
Conan J. Edwards, a Mechanical Engineer based in Saudi Arabia and working with S.A. Kent on the UOU Petrorabigh project, recently completed a diving course. The Tipp man passed with flying colours. The course consisted of three dives, one at 6 am, one in the afternoon and the final one at 10 pm. The dives took place in the middle of the gulf. The highlight of the dives was the night dive where Conan dived to 25 metres. |
The Integr8 Project is a Kentz strategic project which will look at how Information Technology can benefit the Company. It was conceived in the realisation that in order to sustain and manage company growth across the group, certain efficiencies are necessary.
The project will be managed by Paul O’Brien, Group IT/MIS Manager, and will comprise of various components of Information Technology – from the network infrastructure providing connectivity around the globe to the computer applications that Kentz people use throughout their day. The key issue, though, is that Integr8 is ultimately about people – if we provide the best tools and technology to the best people in our industry (that’s you by the way!) these results will be remarkable.
We will focus on three Critical Success Factors:
- Real-Time Communications, both internally and with our clients
- Smart Computer Applications that drive productivity while at the same empowering employees
- Improving Decision-Making Processes by getting the right information to the people when they need it.
This is only the beginning - more updates to follow in future editions of @Kentz. |

Sasol Secunda boys having fun |
The Maintenance & Shutdowns Division based in Durban held their Christmas party at the Durban Country Club on Saturday 9th December. The party was attended by most of the employees from Secunda, Sasolburg and Kentz Head Office. The theme was Arabian Nights, and to add to the atmosphere, belly dancers entertained the crowd with their dancing skills. In true Durban tradition, the party was a great success and the last people left the venue in the wee hours of the morning! |
Middle East Regionalisation
| |
 |
| |
Eamonn O’Hanlon |
The main objectives for this re-organisation are highlighted as follows;
- to fully participate in Middle East Market growth
- to improve margin and risk management
- to expand company culture to embrace EPC concepts
- to establish Kentz in the eyes of our clients as a major player in the entire Middle East region.
Eamonn O’Hanlon was appointed Middle East Regional Manager on 1st January 2007 and has been working on the implementation phase of the project. He has visited all the subsidiary offices and held discussions with senior management on the transition and changes ahead. Further briefings with a wider group of management and staff will continue during February.
As part of this implementation phase, a number of key appointments have been made which are shown in the chart on the left.
These appointments are important to the success of this strategic project. We will be announcing the appointment of other key management positions during the next couple of months as our transition gains more momentum. |
Shave for Cure
 |
|
| Ben Greig |
|
 |
|
| John Richter |
|
You would think that – here are two of the most unlikely Thiess Kentz Supervisor characters to be non-conformists – you’d think wrong! Ben Greig and John Richter, cohorts for many years, are Electrical Construction Supervisors on Project Magnet, Whyalla, South Australia. They are shown here in their natural work condition and are featured as they are requesting that on March 18th you donate to the Leukaemia Foundation’s “Shave for a Cure”. Ben will shave his head (considering he comes back from R&R with a different colour each time, it should make a refreshing change not to have to guess which colour it will be next time!) and John will shave off his beard of 12+ years revealing his beautiful, baby-faced features. Both have had active inputs to other charities such as Breast Cancer Day when Ben turned up at the Pellet Plant in pink so that everyone donated to force him to take the pink shirt off (AU$679)!
Ben’s wife was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia in 1999 and after the Haematologist Specialist said he’d made her better (she has been in remission for 7 years now), Ben reckoned she was just as annoying as before and now wants a refund! So believe me when I say, they will hunt you down, stand beside you and smile, act like your friend and drop locks of hair on your desk unless you donate. The “after” shots will be in the next issue and will come with viewing warnings! (Sorry, girls, they’re both married!) These are the best ‘non-mug’ shots we could find.
NOTES: All monies will be receipted. Thiess Kentz JV is registered with the Leukaemia Foundation “Shave for a Cure” under Ben Greig as coordinator. |
