Kentz’s Biggest Losers!
Management from Kentz in Saudi Arabia recently held a “Biggest Loser Competition” for its employees based on the Saudi Kayan Petrochemical Projects! The competition was initiated by Anthony Uy, Project Manager, as part of the Kentz Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Health Campaign. The 10-week weight loss programme was open to all employees on the project. It was a great incentive for some of the less fit employees to get in shape.

Rules were adopted from one of the most popular reality television series in the United States – “The Biggest Loser”. Before the competition the body weight of each participant was recorded. This was then used to calculate their Body Mass Index (BMI). The participants’ BMIs were then monitored on a weekly basis.

On 8th May the winners were announced. Gerrysil Felipe, Junior Quantity Surveyor, is officially Kentz’s “Biggest Loser” with a total weight loss of 12.6kg. Second place went to Henry Chiu, Senior Planning Engineer, after losing 8.7kg, followed closely by Vasim Ali, Project Administrator. Vasim lost 8.2kg. They were presented with certificates of recognition and cash prizes.

The competition was a massive success and the project’s HSE team are now looking forward to more fun HSE projects. Congratulations to all who participated.

Skilling Up for the Future

Eric Sandelands, Corporate Learning Consultant, recently hosted Skills Enhancement Courses (SECs) for Irish-based Kentz employees at the Hotel Minella in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, from 19th to 22nd April. The course topics included Influence and Assertiveness, and Basic Negotiating Skills.

Influence and Assertiveness
Employees from the finance, business development (BD) departments, and the Technical Support Services Business Unit attended this course on 19th and 20th April.
L-R: Eric Sandelands, facilitator; Anna Brett, Group BD Executive; Tom Dee, Group Management Accountant; Trish Gillespie, Personal Assistant to Technical Services Business Unit Manager; Cathal Coffey, Assistant Accountant; and Melissa O’Connor
The most important lessons learned from this course were:
• to take small steps and take on something achievable
• to stand back from the problem and see the whole situation
• the need to be more transparent
At the end of each day
reflections from each
participant were shared with
the group. One of the course attendees made the following comment:
“The course has taught me to be open to new areas of thinking. I
can reflect better on situations that I’m in. I’ve become more knowledgeable of different approaches and there are areas where
I can now teach others.”

Basic Negotiating Skills
On 21st and 22nd April participants were asked to consider their negotiating challenges, strengths and weaknesses, and craft workable strategies for when they returned to their jobs.

A major highlight of the course was the Kentz perspective, which was provided by Paschal Kennedy, Group Oil and Gas Proposals Manager. In Question and Answer format, Paschal provided a master class; sharing advice, practices and experiences, and addressing issues raised by other participants.

The themes explored included:
• the need for negotiating skills within Kentz
• the negotiating process
• negotiating styles
• barriers to effective negotiations and related considerations
• Kentz case studies
• action plans

At the end of each day everyone was asked to reflect on what they had learned and one participant outlined their experience below:

“I realised that I use negotiating skills much more than I thought I did. I’ll approach problems mindful of negotiating styles, the skills required, and with emphasis on desired outcomes.”

Both courses were very productive and all attendees went away with something positive that they can apply to their everyday work.

Estee Bids a Sad Farewell
Hayley thanking Estee for all her hard work over the years

Kentz’s employees in Midrand, South Africa, recently held a farewell function for Estee Prangley who has decided to broaden her horizons and move abroad to pursue other opportunities. Estee began working for Kentz in 2001 and worked in the Midrand office for three years. She subsequently left in 2004 before returning again in 2005.

Estee originally worked as Human Resources (HR) Secretary and on her return in 2005 was employed in the position of HR Assistant before moving on to HR/Training Facilitator. In January this year she transferred to the training facility in the Johannesburg suburb of Chamdor, where she took up the position of Skills Development Facilitator.

Hayley Barker, Regional HR Manager, presented Estee with a gift – which turned out to be a very useful suitcase – thanked her and wished her well for the future. All the best, Estee, and happy travels!

Enhancing Haiti Through Education

It has been a hard push in the past few weeks to get St. Gerard’s School completed for the opening on 27th July, but thanks to the Kentz and Digicel team this weekend will see the classrooms finished and ready for the children.

Ladies working on the schools

Since the earthquake the children have been schooled in temporary plastic shelters, these are not ideal, but they allowed the children to catch up with their course work. This would normally be the school holidays, but they have a lot of work to catch up on.

IDIJEN, the local National Government Organisation in Port-au-Prince, has offered Kentz a chance to work closer with the local community in Port-au-Prince and to get first-hand feedback of residents’ likes and dislikes with regards to the classroom construction. It was clear from the beginning of the project that the available employment on site had to be treated as an equal opportunity for both males and females alike. The construction team was inundated with ladies seeking work to earn some money for their families. There have been two female carpenters and two female painters working on the project from the very start. Within the last two weeks an additional four female painters have been employed. Their sons will be educated in the new classrooms and they have made an excellent contribution to the project.

During the design and construction of the schools, huge consideration was given to the possibility of another earthquake or of hurricanes causing more devastation. An Irish Structural Engineer working with Digicel has been working closely with Kentz and certain structural additions have been made to each classroom to allow for this, making the structure a lot stronger and more stable. Another feature that has been incorporated is specially designed holdingdown clamps which anchor the container units into concrete pedestals, ensuring that the structure will not move in the strongest of winds.

The fabrication factory unit is now complete and 80% of the classrooms will be constructed here, with the remaining 20% of the assembly work being undertaken on site. Mark Ford, Project Manager, will be in charge of the factory unit and John Skelly, Construction Manager, will be heading up construction and assembly work at various school locations in and around the capital. With the prospect of another 40 or more schools to complete, they have a hard task ahead of them.

Thanks again to everyone in Kentz for their contribution.

World cup Madness
Kentz in South Africa welcomed the start of the long-awaited and much-anticipated Federation
of International Football Associations (FIFA) Football World Cup 2010 on Friday 11th June, by
proudly wearing their branded “Kentz team” custom-made football shirts.

Everyone in the Midrand office gathered in the reception area on Friday 11th June and went outside for a team photograph. The Durban office employees gathered on their balcony and admired the wonderful new stadium, which is visible from their office.

The atmosphere was great and even the local ex-pats were proud South Africans for the day! The offices closed at lunchtime to enable staff to get home or go to a venue in time to watch the opening ceremony and enthusiastically show their support for the South African team, locally known as Bafana Bafana, and South Africa as a whole.

Midrand employees
A few of Kentz’s employees and key clients were thrilled to be invited to the opening ceremony and the opening game between South Africa and Mexico. This was a truly joyous and amazing experience for the sellout crowd at the 88,460-capacity Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg. The most spectacular sight was witnessing the South African Air Force MIG Jets entertaining spectators with a fantastic fly-past demonstration.
As the competition continued, South Africa failed to make it out of the group stages, the majority of the teams progressing coming from the Americas and Europe. There were some spectacular displays of football skills from the South Americans in the quarter finals but the Europeans triumphed, culminating with a Netherlands v Spain final on Sunday 11th July. After 30 minutes of extra time Spain scored the only goal of the game, becoming FIFA World Cup Champions 2010.

Although the noise from the vuvuzelas was deafening, it didn’t seem to impact on the occasion as everyone thoroughly enjoyed this rare and momentous tournament. The whole experience is one that many people in South Africa will remember for a long time to come!

Kentz’s Triathlon Star

Belinda Nevell, Human Resources Advisor based at Kentz’s Brisbane office in Australia, recently participated in the Nissan/BRW Corporate Triathlon Challenge on the beautiful Gold Coast of Queensland.

The event is held in the Doug Jennings Park on “The Spit”, which is the perfect triathlon venue. The park is surrounded by the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean which, along with the famous regional sunshine and flat ground, make it an ideal cycle course.

Competitors began the event with a 400m swim, followed by a 10km cycle and finished off with a 4km run. Belinda completed the triathlon in a personal best time of 1 hour, 2 minutes and 42 seconds.

Well done, Belinda, and congratulations from all in Kentz!
