Harry's Birthday Celebrations   Harry Sonnenberg
Harry Sonnenberg, Thiess Kentz General Manager, celebrated his 57th birthday on 21st May. To celebrate the occasion the staff in the Perth office bought him a cake and big “5” and “7” candles. But to Harry’s surprise some cheeky staff members changed the numbers around to make it look like he was turning 75!

There was also a celebratory dinner held for Harry on the evening of his birthday. This was attended by staff from the Perth office and Thiess Kentz Board members who happened to be having a Board meeting the same day. Joining the Perth staff were Hugh O'Donnell, Kentz CEO; Dave Ross, Kentz Chief Operations Officer; Greg Miller, Thiess Executive General Manager; Alex Lang, General Thiess Process Commercial & Finance Manager; Jim Aquino, Thiess Executive Business Development Manager, and Errol Akom, Thiess Process Finance & Administration Manager. The dinner was held at Sorrento Restaurant, Northbridge, Perth.

As usual for Kentz, a great time was had by all and some celebrated into the early hours of the morning.

A Big Treat for Roy
Brenda Carter, Creditors Supervisor for Kentz South Africa, recently treated her husband to a once-in-a-lifetime holiday for his 60th birthday. Imagine Roy's surprise and delight when a stretch limousine, complete with champagne, arrived at their home to transport them to the airport to embark on their journey to the mystical island of Zanzibar.

On 19th March, the night of his birthday, their hotel laid out a splendid meal, the staff sung Happy Birthday to Roy and rounded it off by presenting him with a birthday cake.

1st Electrical Graduate from
Accelerated Training Programme
Alan Sparks and Simon Bell
L/R: Alan Sparks, East Coast Apprenticeships, and Simon Bell

Simon Bell from Clontarf, Brisbane, began his electrical apprenticeship with East Coast Apprenticeships and Thiess Kentz on 13th November 2006. 17 months later, in April 2008, Simon completed his trade training on the unique Thiess Apprenticeships Training Scheme (TATS). This revolutionary programme offers adult apprentices advanced entry into a 2-stage trade training pathway that has achieved extraordinary progress and results.

Simon came from a Qantas background and in the TATS programme's first stage gained significant credits which resulted in his advanced entry status. He has worked very hard on major Thiess Kentz projects across Queensland, completing his gap training requirements to achieve his full trade qualification in record time. As the first electrical graduate of TATS, Simon joins 25 others who gained their trade qualifications in metal fabrication over an average period of 13 months.

Thiess Kentz would like to congratulate Simon on this magnificent achievement and wish him all the best in his future with the Company.

Congratulations to Kentz Krusaders on winning their first four matches in the 2008 Clonmel RFC Tag Rugby Tournament. Managed and trained by Bob Greaney, they have become a team to be reckoned with in the tournament. With the fast pace of the boys and brilliant tagging abilities of the girls, they are on course for the finals on Thursday 10th July.

Tag rugby, which has become a craze over the past number of summers in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick, hit Clonmel with a bang last summer. It is a fun game, with no physical contact of any kind allowed. The teams are mixed, with each team comprising of seven players, which must include two ladies at all times.

For the 2008 tournament, a series of games are played on Thursday nights at the Clonmel RFC grounds, with each team playing one game every week. This culminates on Thursday 3rd July when the last of the group stages are played. The finals take place on Thursday 10th July with teams playing from quarter finals to the final. This means the top two teams will have to play three games each to reach the final. We wish Kentz Krusaders the best of luck for the remainder of the tournament.

On Friday 16th May 2008, Qatar Kentz co-sponsored the first ever JK "Pearl Village Fun Run", held at the Al Muntazah Village in Ras Laffan, Qatar. The event, in which almost 1,500 people took part, was held, primarily to promote mental and physical health. However, so much more was taken from it – not only did everyone have fun, but it provided a way for everyone to get together and meet new people from the surrounding camps.

After a quick pep talk, the run began at 7.00 am and participants had the option of doing a 3-km, 6-km or 9-km fun run. An hour later most of the participants had finished and it was then time for the winners to claim their prizes.

Although Kentz participants were not in the prizes this time, everyone had a great time. The JK Welfare Advisory Services deemed the event such a success that they have already decided to make this an annual one. Well done to Kentz staff who participated and let's all get our running shoes out for next year's fun run!

The fourth Executive Diploma in Leadership and Management (EDipLM) group held their first workshop in Dubai from 29th May to 1st June 2008. The 12 participants come from a wide variety of disciplines and are from various locations across the Group.

The new participants attended the graduation dinner on 28th May and had the chance to hear all about the course from the outgoing EDipLM graduates. This meant the new students discovered first-hand about the action-learning process and the time and effort required to successfully complete the course.

Dr. Hugh O'Donnell conducted a workshop mapping out Kentz global strategy after the graduation ceremony. It was well received by all and set the context for the programme.

The first workshop, entitled Essentials of Management, covered:
  • Planning Process
  • Managing Quality
  • Project Management Manual and Briefing
  • Kentz Systems
  • Managerial Communications

  • Time Management
  • Financial Management
  • People Management
  • Managing Client Relationships
  • Learning Process

Following the workshop, participants worked in teams to analyse the implications of what they have learned in relation to implementing selected strategic projects. We wish you all the best of luck in completing the course.
